A Walk Through History
Sadashivanagar’s story begins with Kempe Gowda I, who built a watchtower here in 1597 to mark the city’s northern boundary. Originally part of the royal gardens of Bangalore Palace, the area was transformed into a residential neighbourhood in the 1960s–70s and was then called “Palace Orchards.” In the 1990s, it was renamed Sadashivanagar in honour of Karnad Sadashiva Rao, a celebrated freedom fighter and philanthropist.
One of the neighbourhood’s hidden gems is the Kempegowda North Tower at Mekhri Circle, home to a marker of the Great Trigonometrical Survey (GTS) — the starting point for mapping India and measuring Mount Everest. This monument in Kempegowda Park reminds us of the city’s role in scientific history.
